Tattoo Aftercare: Second Skin Guidelines
Congratulations on your new tattoo! To ensure proper healing and the best possible result, please follow these aftercare instructions for your Second Skin bandage.
What is Second Skin?
Second Skin is a breathable, adhesive barrier designed to protect your tattoo during its most vulnerable healing stages. It helps lock in your body’s natural fluids to aid in healing while keeping out dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants.
How Long to Keep It On
-
Leave the Second Skin bandage on for up to 5 days after your session.
-
If it comes loose, leaks, or lifts early, remove it immediately and follow traditional tattoo aftercare.
💦 Water & Showering
-
Water-resistant, not waterproof — light showers are okay, but avoid soaking, swimming, or hot tubs.
-
If water gets under the bandage, remove it as soon as possible to prevent infection.
❗ When & How to Remove
-
Gently remove in the shower with warm water to help loosen the adhesive.
-
Pull in the direction of your skin (not away from it), using slow, steady movements for comfort.
🧼 After Removal
-
Wash the tattoo gently with liquid, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let air dry.
-
Apply a thin layer of unscented, gentle lotion 2–3 times a day to keep the area moisturized.
-
Avoid petroleum-based products, excessive rubbing, or scratching.
✅ What’s Normal
-
Seeing plasma, blood, or excess ink pooling under the bandage is completely normal.
-
Slight redness or pressure marks around the edges are common and should fade quickly.
⚠️ What to Avoid
-
Do not reapply Second Skin once it’s removed or comes off early.
-
Avoid picking, peeling, or scratching at the bandage or tattoo.
-
Do not expose your healing tattoo to direct sunlight or tanning beds.
💬 Other Important Notes
-
If you’re having a reaction to the adhesive (e.g., excessive redness, itching, rash, or blisters), remove the Second Skin immediately and consult your healthcare provider.
-
If you’ve had prior reactions to adhesives, inform your artist before your session.
-
